Objectives:Long term use of the topical alendronate was found to cause a significant degree of sexual dysfunction in young men in Hong Kong and this is consistent with the clinical findings observed with finasteride and other antiandrogen drugs. We have recently found that the topical alendronate may be of potential use in the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
Methods:We performed a controlled double blind clinical trial (NCT05011177) to evaluate the effect of the topical alendronate on hair growth in male pattern bald patients. The study was conducted in male pattern hair loss patients at the Hong Kong General Hospital (KGTH).
Results:The topical alendronate showed a significant increase in total hair growth compared to placebo, and treatment with the topical alendronate resulted in a significant reduction in the number of scalp hairs (3.7%, p < 0.01). No further hair loss was noted during the hair growth trials, nor were there any significant hair shedding (p < 0.01).
Conclusions:The topical alendronate appears to be a useful treatment for male pattern hair loss.

In vitro studies showed that the topical alendronate significantly increased the concentration of DHT, which is responsible for the production of dihydrotestosterone.We have recently shown that the topical alendronate can be used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss in the treatment of male pattern baldness (previously known as androgenetic alopecia). We believe this has been an important benefit of the topical alendronate in men with male pattern baldness. Because of the significant hair loss seen with topical alendronate and the reduced hair growth we believe this will be useful in the treatment of male pattern baldness.
We have also observed that the topical alendronate has the potential to have a positive effect on male pattern hair loss in men with male pattern baldness. This has been observed in a clinical trial, and has been shown to be associated with a significant increase in the number of hair follicles. The results of this trial suggest that topical alendronate may be an appropriate treatment for male pattern hair loss in men with male pattern baldness.
The effects of the topical alendronate on the hair growth of male pattern baldness were investigated in this study in a double-blinded clinical trial, and have shown that the topical alendronate can be used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. The results of this trial were published in the March 15, 2008 issue of the American Hair Care Association Journal. The investigators were asked to note the effects of the topical alendronate on hair growth and the side effects reported in the clinical trials.
